How Will Pregnancy Affect Me Mentally?

Posted on April 25, 2024 by Metro Women's Care

Pregnancy affects every woman differently, and it’s common for your feelings to be all over the place as you consider your pregnancy.

Hormonal changes during pregnancy often affect your mood, leading to heightened emotions. These shifts are not only due to hormonal fluctuations but also the adjustment to pregnancy and the changes this brings to one's life.

Mood Changes During Pregnancy

Physical stress, tiredness, shifts in metabolism, and the hormones estrogen and progesterone can lead to mood changes during pregnancy. These hormones greatly influence your brain and control your mood.

Most often, mood swings occur in the first trimester, around 6 to 10 weeks, and return in the third trimester as your body gets ready for birth.

Combating Negative Emotions During Pregnancy

One study underlines the importance of social support during this period. The study indicates that pregnant individuals who feel supported by their partners, families, and friends are less likely to experience severe mental health issues. A lack of support can lead to feelings of isolation and stress.

Take part in self-care. Pay attention to what your body and mind are telling you they need. If taking a relaxing bubble bath appeals to you, go for it. Or, if you crave some alone time to unwind with a book or movie, make sure to carve out space for these activities that enable you to rest and recharge.

Make sure to get enough sleep. Achieving eight hours of quality sleep can significantly improve your mood. While it might not always be possible to get the full 8 hours, strive to maximize your sleep.

Similarly to sleep, diet is crucial in managing your mood and emotions. Opting for wholesome, natural foods over processed options can boost your physical and mental well-being, leading to greater emotional balance.
