Pre-Abortion Consultation

If you are considering an abortion, we can help you make a fully informed decision with abortion education provided by our licensed medical professional staff.

Informed consent means you have been educated about risks, benefits, the nature of treatment, alternate care, and you have had the opportunity to ask all of your questions and receive truthful answers.

Informed consent before you have an abortion begins with an ultrasound consultation.

Ultrasound Consultations

Our licensed medical staff will evaluate your medical history, and provided you meet the criteria for an ultrasound exam, an ultrasound exam will then be performed to determine how far along you are and the viability of your pregnancy. These are important factors to know whether you’re considering parenthood, adoption, or abortion. About one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, and some pregnancies – called ectopic pregnancies – occur outside of the uterus and require urgent medical attention. An ectopic pregnancy is a potentially life-threatening condition. If you have miscarried, then you don’t need an abortion. It is also important to know that the abortion pill will not end an ectopic pregnancy. The only way to determine any of these factors is with an ultrasound exam which will:

  • Determine how far along in pregnancy you are (gestational age).
  • Ensure you are not experiencing a potentially life-threatening ectopic pregnancy (Necessary to know before an abortion).
  • Rule out a miscarriage, which can impact up to 20% of pregnancies.

Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Testing

It is important for your health to be tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This is especially true if you are pregnant and considering an abortion. Many people with STIs do not have symptoms. STIs can pose serious risks to your future reproductive health. Some may even be life-threatening if an abortion is performed with an active STI.

Metro Women's Care offers the following free limited STI testing and treatment when Pregnancy testing services are received in our clinic:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea

We also offer free screening and (testing if indicated) for:

  • Syphilis
  • HIV

Our STI testing is performed by competent licensed healthcare professionals. The results are usually available within a day or two. If treatment for Chlamydia or Gonorrhea is indicated by a positive test result, it will be offered and is provided at no cost to you in our clinic. Education on how to protect yourself and your reproductive health from future infection is available as well and offered by non-judgemental clinicians. We are here for you

Abortion Education

Once we have confirmed that you have a viable pregnancy and have confirmed your dates, we can provide education regarding the different methods of abortion, which vary depending on how far along you are:

● Medication abortion, also known as the abortion pill, includes two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol

● Suction dilation and curettage (D&C)

● Dilation and evacuation (D&E)

● Dilation and extraction (D&X)

● Intact dilation and extraction (IDE)

Both medication and surgical abortions are serious medical procedures, and it’s important to know what is involved in them. We’ll give you time to consider all of your pregnancy options. Abortion is a life-changing decision. You deserve to take the time you need. We offer a judgment-free, safe, and supportive environment to think through how abortion may impact you.
